Last Thursday the 8th grade softball team opened up the season with a win against Olentangy Orange by a score of 12-8. The Eagles scored 8 runs off 17 walks by Orange pitchers. Avery Moravitz and Chloe Rice accounted for 4 of those runs. Maddy Baucke started the season off right by leading the team with 2 RBIs at the plate and having 6 putouts on defense. Ashlyn Greathouse recorded a complete game win in the circle recording 8 strikeouts in 7 innings.
On Saturday, the Eagles traveled to Marysville for a doubleheader with Bunsold Middle School. The Monarchs took a one run lead in the first but it was short lived after Josey Durst executed a perfect bunt down the third base line, scoring 2. Gabby Delgenio added another RBI to make it 3-1 and the Eagles didn't look back after that. Jenna Couser added a couple of hits and an RBI and Maddy Baucke added a couple of more RBIs when she doubled to left field, sealing the victory. Ashlyn Greathouse got the win from the circle by striking out 9, giving up 3 hits and only walking 2 in 7 innings.
The second game started off with fireworks by the Eagles recording a rare triple play. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Maddy Baucke made a diving catch from the circle, then threw to Maggie Adams at second who then completed the rare feat by throwing to Jenna Couser at first. That didn't deter the Monarchs though as they built up a 10 to 5 lead. But the Eagles rallied and put up 7 in the bottom of the 6th. Timely hitting, drawing walks, and good baserunning allowed the team to bat-around. The rally started with Ashlyn Greathouse clearing the bases with a double to left center. After a couple of scores off passed balls, Josey Durst and Joslyn Shaver scored off a double by Maddy Baucke. Good defense and communication secured the 12 to 10 victory. Of note, the Eagles were hit by 6 pitches over the weekend, including 2 each by Callie Bowman and Avery Moravitz. Also, Chloe Rice limited the Monarch's baserunning by being a wall behind the plate.
The 3 and 0 Eagles travel to Berlin on Tuesday and are home Thursday against Shanahan and finish out the week with a doubleheader against Delaware Dempsey on Saturday.
