This year, Girls Wrestling has exploded in Ohio. As a result of several full girls teams and hundreds of girls wrestling on Coed teams in Ohio, the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association worked to hold the first ever Ohio Girls Wrestling State Championships. The tournament was held Saturday and Sunday at Hilliard Davidson High School. Over 260 girls from 99 schools participated in the historic event.
Two of those girls were Big Walnut’s own Cali Lang and Aliya Martin. Both entered the tournament as highly ranked wrestlers in the State. Senior Aliya Martin was ranked 2nd at 137 lbs, while Junior Cali Lang was ranked 5th at 106 lbs.
Cali made history on Saturday with the first win of the tournament, a 35 second pin! She followed up with another pin to put her in the quarterfinals at 106 lbs. Aliya had a bye in the first round, but followed that up with a pin in the second round to put her in the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinal round, Cali Lang faced third ranked Jadah McMillen of Sidney. Cali lost by decision. This would send her to the consolation bracket, where she would need to win her next two matches to guarantee placement of 6th place or better. Aliya had a different outcome in the quarterfinals winning by pin over Emily Lorenzon of Akron Firestone to ensure a placement at the tournament.
Sunday began with Cali’s march through the consi rounds. She began with a pin over Reynoldsburg’s Gracie Straughter. She then pinned Colerain’s Bailey Brewer in just under a minute. This win guaranteed here placement.
Aliya ran into Delaware’s Track Star Ari Avant in the semifinals. Aliya stayed tough with the strong Avant and finished 5-0 to put her in the championship bout.
Cali would wrestle Olentangy Orange’s Lexi Simmons next. Cali had beaten Simmons twice before in the season. Cali’s pin over Simmons would put her in the Consolation Finals to wrestle for third place.
Cali faced Hubbard’s Kylee Bentley next. Bentley had just beaten McMillen who beat Cali on Saturday. Cali left the mat exhausted with a 17-10 win for 3rd place. The area around the mat erupted with her win as Cali is one of the friendliest wrestlers in the event and had gained hundreds of fans over the weekend.
Aliya then faced Olentangy Orange’s top ranked Taryn Martin in the finals. While Taryn won over Aliya by pin, she had definitely improved since their last match.
In the end, Big Walnut placed 10th at the tournament with Aliya in 2nd place and Cali in 3rd place. This is a great moment in time for Big Walnut and the wrestling program as we tie our highest ever placement at a state wrestling tournament.
We are very proud of Aliya and Cali.
